State of Emergency in San Pedro Extended to 30 Days

After the first infection case of COVID-19 was announced on Monday, March 23, 2020, in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize, the Prime Minister has announced a second case directly involved with the first case, being that of a 38-year-old woman who traveled from Los Angeles to Belize. As a result, the island of Ambergris Caye will remain under a state of emergency for 30 days.

The second case in the country of Belize has been confirmed to be the mother of the woman confirmed with the first corona virus case, both in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Her infection is said to have come about from direct contact with her daughter. Other family members were screened and tested with negative results.

PM Barrow also indicated that there were five other people tested in San Pedro, separate from the first case, and all results came back negative. Four other tests were conducted on the mainland, all proving negative results of COVID-19.

Additional mapping, tracking and testing will be conducted in relation to the second confirmed case of COVID-19 infection. PM Barrow said he hopes that this lockdown on Ambergris Caye  will be lifted before the 30 days depending on results of mapping and testing. As of yet, there is no shutdown of the entire nation.
