Crime is slowly becoming a major issue in San Pedro and the Belize Tourism Industry Association San Pedro Branch organized a meeting with business stakeholders and the community to come together and discuss the issue that are affecting our island community and to see what actions can be taken to alleviate the situation. The meeting took place on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at the Angel Nunez Auditorium and was very well attended.
Those in attendance heard testimonies from selected speakers who shared testimonies of their lives in San Pedro and how precious the island is to them. Speakers included Mrs. Celi McCorkle (San Pedro Holiday Hotel), Everette Anderson (Chairman of the San Pedro Tour Operators Association) , Dr. Renae Reasa (Doctor at SP Poly Clinic), Gary Greif (Town Councilor), Natasha Stuart, Carlo Segura (Bar Owner), Lady Dixie Bowen (The Island Academy/Bowen & Bowen), Karen Pike (BTB Director of Marketing & Industry Relations), Raineldo Guerrero (BTIA President), Phillip Henry, Henry Jemmott (San Pedro Police Department) and San Pedro Mayor Daniel Guerrero.
Good news coming from the was that the San Pedro Police Department will be receiving ten additional police officers and that land has been acquired on North Ambergris Caye for the construction of new military base.
This meeting was the first step of the SP BTIA and tourism stakeholders in brining the community together to start working on proactive steps in tackling the crime situation. Comments and concerns were collected by the BTIA and will provide a report as early as next week on the immediate plans they have on addressing the crime situation on Ambergris Caye.
