Embarking on a cleanup campaign of the island, the San Pedro Town Council has been targeting different areas and doing massive clean ups. This past Saturday, May 5, 2018, the Council held its first official Community Clean up in the Boca del Rio and San Juan Areas.
The San Pedro Town Council Staff and volunteers were out bright and early eager to get the work done. It was quite a sight seeing how many loads of garbage were taken out of the areas. Construction material, old fans, house hold, garbage…everything was cleaned up and garbage bags filled to the max. Heavy machinery had to be used to remove all the debris in the area.
The San Pedro Town Council is taking big steps in trying to keep the island clean and is already setting up another Community Clean Up for another area on the island in the weeks to come. We definitely applaud these efforts.
Now a big concern for many island residents is the topic of illegal trash dumping. While the Town Council is cleaning up certain areas of the island, there are many who are still illegally dumping garbage (old appliances, bed frames, construction material, etc) in areas such as San Mateo (to be used as landfill) and the back road behind the airstrip area.
Not only is this an eyesore for tourists arriving on airplanes (having to see a dump as they arrive on “La Isla Bonita”), but it is very hazardous to the environment and public health. It would be great to see the Town Council enforcing some heavy fines to these people so that their efforts of cleaning the island are not futile.
Let us all help keep our island clean and do our part. Clean up our areas and report those who are committing these atrocious acts of illegal dumping! Take their pictures, video them and report them to the Town Council!
