Republic of China (Taiwan). April 12th, 2018. On an invitation from the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Minister of Health Hon. Pablo Marin paid a working visit to Taiwan from April 2nd to 6th, 2018. While in Taiwan, Minister Marin engaged in fruitful meetings and discussions with Minister of Health and Welfare, Hon. Shih-chung Chen, and other key personnel in the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
The Ministers discussed ways in which Taiwan and Belize can continue to collaborate on fostering the health and wellness of the peoples of both countries. Among the topics discussed were Belize’s model Health Information System (BHIS), which other countries, including Taiwan, can learn from as is happening in the Caribbean Region. The Ministers also conversed about Belize’s continued and unwavering support for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization’s World Health Assembly. During the discussions, Minister Marin also made a request for scholarships for medical specialists.
Hon. Marin visited Taiwan’s International Cooperation Development Fund (ICDF) and the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH), which has partnered with Belize in implementing a “Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Renal Failure in Belize”. The FEMH team provided an update on the status of the project and very preliminary results of a major survey being conducted to determine critical factors contributing to the prevalence of kidney diseases in Belize. The final report on the survey is expected in February 2019.
Minister Marin also met with a few of the Belize scholarship students studying in Taiwan.
Minister Marin expressed his gratitude, on behalf of the Government and people of Belize, to the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its continuous support. He also thanked Belize’s Ambassador in Taiwan H.E. Diane Haylock for accompanying him on this successful visit.
