It just takes three weeks for Cuban music teacher Carlos Perrote to bring out the musician in students who participate in his Summer Music Camp. In his third year, the maestro of music delivered a final musical presentation with his students on Friday, August 7, 2015, that once again exceeded the expectations of parents and guests.
The camp saw many returning students who have been with the program since its inception and new members who want to learn music; some of the students had never touched a musical instrument before. And the camp is not restricted to young children, this year saw the participation of one adult who took her lessons in the evenings after work.
The musical camp offers the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments and allows participants to showcase their talent at a musical presentation at the end of the camp. At the final concert presentation, the students demonstrated how they had mastered a number of instruments that include the Keyboard, Guitar and percussion instruments such as Garifuna drums, Djembe, Cajon, Congas, Tamboras, Bass Drums, Marching Snare Drums, Brazilian Bass Drums, Bata Drums and the Steel Pans.
The Summer Music Camp has proven to be successful all three years and parents are excited to hopefully one day see a music band grow out from the camp. In past years both San Pedro Mayor Daniel Guerrero and Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., Area Representative and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation have pledged their support to the camp, promised to develop it even further to produce a music school and steel band on the island; after three years, no progress has been made, except for the continuing Summer Camp.
Perrote is a Cuban music teacher and is well educated in the world of music, having played in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, and even touring Germany, France and Italy. With the help of the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), Caribbean Queen (free barge transfer of equipment), San Pedro High School (Free Venue) and Atlantic Bank that made a cash donation this year, Mr. Perrote was able to bring forth another fruitful Summer Music Camp once again. Through Ambergris Today, he humbly thanks all those who participated and donated towards the program.
