El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro has come to end, for this year that is! Carnaval painters and dancers hit the streets of San Pedro early to enjoy the last day of Carnaval on Tuesday, March 4, 2014. The painting and dancing was at its max! Music and dancing by the comparsa groups livened up the streets of San Pedro and let us not forget the herd of Carnaval revelers running up and down the streets painting each other. Oh the fun of one of San Pedro’s most loved tradition!
It was the men’s comparsa (Barbies of San Pedro) that parodied one of the country’s biggest scandals – the sale of passports and visas by ministers Elvin Penner and Edmund Castro had everybody bursting in laughter as the Penner and Castro impersonators, complete with hundred dollar bills and passports and of course ‘women’ companions, hit the streets to entertain for the last day of San Pedro Carnaval 2014 celebrations.
Then comes in Mr. Penner
He is selling our passport
And he sold it to Kim!
These were some of the lyrics from the Passport Scandal Parody Comparsa where the men dressed in drag and made fun of the entire incident taking place in our country Belize.
Coming out on top in the comparsa competition was the San Pedro AIDS Commission that celebrated the last day with a Carnival theme, with bright costumes and lots of energy. In second place was The Barbies (Men) Comparsa which brought much fun for the three days of carnaval with great musical renditions, high energy and lots of entertainment. Taking third place was Doña Flora Ancona’s Group Comparsa who depicted the Belizean Creole and filled the streets with much color, dance and joy spreading the carnaval spirit.
The painting aspect of Carnaval this year was much fun as the crowd of painting revelers took to front street Barrier Reef Drive and Central Park as a grand celebration was heightened as the Town Council hosted resident DJ’s to keep the celebration alive.
It was three great days of Carnaval in our beautiful island of San Pedro, Que Viva San Pedro y Que Viva El Carnaval!
