For being a small town, San Pedro is faced with a lot of traffic problems. The hustle and bustle of everyday traffic that keeps things running on the island can become overwhelming at times. It’s the price residents have to pay to enjoy the commodities their island paradise provides. With all that traffic, there are too little traffic wardens to properly control and keep a close eye on the situation. The San Pedro Traffic Department counts with seven wardens all who have a lot on their hands to deal with.
This week the San Pedro Traffic Department has armed its wardens with a device that will assist them, not to alleviate traffic, but to hammer down on speeding. The department has acquired a speed gun to monitor the speeding habits of drivers and administer traffic tickets to those who violate the speed laws on the island.
Traffic Wardens are constantly on the lookout at the school zones during morning drop offs, lunch break and afternoon pickups. Aside from that they have to monitor that parking, make sure drivers have valid driver’s license, vehicles are insured, traffic signs respected and most importantly control speeding on the roads.
Speeding is quiet an issue on Ambergris Caye and residents can be heard venting their frustrations on the local radio stations, while others commenting on the incredible road rage experiences on social media. To help in this situation the San Pedro Traffic Department is now equipped with a speed gun to monitor the speed of vehicles and to enforce laws even better.
The speed limit in the San Pedro Town core area is 10MPH while on other roads its 15MPH. Motorists are asked to respect these speed limits and are advised that they will be fined if they are caught speeding. Other than golf carts, vehicles that will be closely monitored for speeding will be the taxis, private cars, Polaris vehicles and motorcycles.
