The San Pedro High School baseball team is preparing arduously for a sports challenge which will be a first for the school and for Belize. The team will be representing the country at the Student Athlete Games in Panama City, Panama taking place in September.
The high school team is actually a male softball team that has switched gears to baseball in order to be able to compete in the games where they will be playing against the national champions of other Central American countries.
“The San Pedro High Softball team won national earlier this year; that was a great achievement for the school,” commented team trainer Marion Mejia. “It is a challenge to switch to baseball as the boys are used to a smaller field and bigger balls; but they are training very hard and working on making the switch.”
With the help from friends Dave and Joe Nisbet of International Sport Outreach (ISO) the team is getting prepared to travel to Panama where the games will take place from September 14 to the 24, 2012. The team is made up of students from San Pedro High School but recruits from other schools also make up the Belize team. There are two players from Saint John’s College and one each from Belmopan Baptist, Independence High School and Belmopan Comprehensive High School. Also coaching the team is Johnito Majarrez and Mario Hernandez and practices take place on a regular basis here in San Pedro.
A total team of 22, comprising of 16 players and coaches/chaperones will be traveling to the Student Athlete Games; any assistance that can rendered to the team will be greatly appreciated. Monetary donations, uniforms and equipment are welcome and can be submitted to Marion Mejia at the San Pedro Town Council (631-7976) or by contacting San Pedro High School (226-2045).
