The San Pedro Fire department received an early morning call today, Monday, July 25, 2011, about a fire at the San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School compound. Upon arriving at the school at 4:30a.m., they encountered the school’s palapa engulfed in flames.
Quick response from the Fire Department prevented the entire palapa from completely burning down and secured the safety of two nearby buildings. The palapa is located behind the main school building in the backyard.
San Pedro Fire Chief, Mr. Garcia, commented to Ambergris Today that the cause of the fire is still unknown. The school is closed for summer vacations and Principal Kay is out of the island. The Fire Department needs to meet with school officials to continue its investigations. Chief Garcia did mention that the palapa has an electrical supply.
