San Pedro High School was host to the Basketball Nationals at the Rafael Angel Nuñez Auditorium on Friday, December 16 and Saturday, December 17. The two-day exciting event consisted of High School level students from all over Belize competing for the championship title. On Friday Mr. Emil Vasquez, principal of San Pedro High School, welcomed all teams and wished them the very best on the competition.
The Auditorium was jam-packed with fans cheering for their favorite team. Saturday morining arose and the teams were ready to go head to head once again for the finals; as expected it was another packed house filled with more excitement and aniticipation. Every team brought their A-game and gave it their all and lastly got awarded with medals and trophies for their fantastic effort.
First place Female division: St. Catherine Academy
First Place Male division: Sadie Vernon Technical High School and San Pedro High School came in Second Place.
The zone winners, four male and female teams from the north south, central and west participated. The female teams were from Muffles College, SCA, Sacred Heart, and Delile Academy and the male teams were from San Pedro High School, Sadie Vernon Technical High School, Belmopan Comprehensive, and Stann Creek Ecumenical.
In the female final national championship game it came down to Central Zone Champion St. Catherine Academy which defeated Northern Zone champion, Muffles College 30-13. SCA becomes national champions for the first time in 17 years. They were led by Championship game MVP, Gilda Estrada.
In the male game, Central Zone Champion, Sadie Vernon Technical High School defeated San Pedro High School 82-68. Sadie Vernon becomes the national champion for the third year in a row. They were led by Championship game MVP Andrew Ortiz.
The teams are now designated to attend the CODICADER regional Championships in Panama. Congratulations to all the teams for their impressive effort and participation at the Basketball Nationals 2011.
