The San Pedro Transport Department made a public announcement on November 4, 2010 advising all motorists that it is now mandatory to present a helmet when licensing their motorcycle. Failure to comply with the prerequisite will result in refusal to inspect and license the motorcycle.

Mr. Chris Nuñez, Chairman of the San Pedro Transport Department, stated that they have been noticing that there have been many accidents involving motor cycles and motorists end up getting hurt. Hence they found the need of enforcing the already existing law.

“By law, any person owning a motor cycle should present a helmet when licensing their motorcycle and use it,” commented Nuñez. “We noticed that many who came to license their motorcycles or renew their licenses presented their helmets and never use them on the road. Most of them do not own a helmet and borrow one just for licensing purposes.”

Motorists will be asked to not only present their helmets when licensing their motorcycles but also to show the receipt of purchase of the helmet. All motorists will be given a grace period from now till the end of November of this year then after tickets will be issued to motorists breaking this law.

It is law in Belize to use a helmet. Even if you don't care about your safety, the law prevails.

The San Pedro Transport Department should be sued. 1.) They are trying to copy a law that is here in the United State to tax people under the guise of a fee to save lives. 2.) They cannot specify that you must present a receipt for your helmet.  3.) Which one of their relative or friends are selling motor cycle helmets?????????? The San Pedro Transport Department and its employees cannot make/pass laws. I must come directly from Belmopan.  They start from motor cycle helmets.  Next it will be bicycle pads and helmets for certain age. Skateboarding with pads and helmets.  Seat Belts. Smog your Vehicles  F*** Smog your Golf Carts. And on and on..................... Where will it stop???????????  STOP LISTENING TO THE  GRINGOS.  Take control of your country BEAUTIFUL BELIZE.  SAN PEDRO IS A PART OF BELIZE!  DON'T EVER FORGET THAT.

Wearing helmets while driving a motorcycle is one step forward to being a country that recognizes safety precautions that can prevent serious injuries. Regardless of how stupid it may seem, it's better to be safe than sorry. This is a perfect example of being able to teach youngsters to think about safety before anything else.

    Helmets are a GO!
