“Music is the Strongest form of Magic”- There is a lot of magic going on at the San Pedro High School as the first ever music camp on the island is in full swing with Maestro Carlos Perrote. Over 60 students are enrolled at the camp from as young as age five to adults. Gaven ("Angel" Perlita’s Son) and Isariel ("Angel" Sofie’s Son) are both enrolled at the music camp so the Angels had to get into the action and make some tunes along with the children.
Those enrolled in the summer music camp, now in its last week, had the opportunity to learn the noble art of music under the leadership of Cuban music teacher Carlos Perrote. Maestro Carlos is well educated in the world of music, having played in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, and even touring Germany, France and Italy.
Since 1991, Carlos Perrote has resided in Belize where he has produced two albums, worked as a music teacher at the National Institute of Creative Arts, and was even musical director for the late Andy Palacio and the Garifuna Collective. Perrote has hosted similar music camps in Orange Walk Town and Belize City.
Music Camp kicked off on Monday, July 22 and his students are learning the skills of playing a variety of instruments which include the Garifuna drums, Djembe, Cajon, Congas, Tamboras, Bass Drums, Marching Snare Drums, Brazilian Bass Drums, Bata Drums and the Steel Pans, to name a few. Maestro Carlos Perrote counts with the help of his very talented children Alma Perrote, Carson Perrote and Cuba Perrote and Keano Chaplin.
Perlita being a drummer since her high school days was in heaven (literally LOL)! The class was a breeze for her! During the music session Maestro Carlos had the Angels conduct a solo part during one of his practice sessions which made it even more fun; the children all laughed and played along. We then headed to the steel pans! Angel Perlita had the task of accompanying the steel drums on the drum set while Angel Sofie was placed on the first Steel Pan (High C tenor Steel Pan).
The hour and a half sessions run from Monday to Friday. The hard work of the children for the three weeks of camp will be showed off at a final percussion/steel band concert at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium on Friday, August 9, 2013 at 10a.m. sharp! (Trust us they are punctual); entrance is free and parents and friends are invited to come.
