Caye Caulker "Not a Lot of Hoop or Hoopla but Still and Always a Lot of Fun" is a new book that captures a collection of words and images on how the authors felt. One of the them is Tina Auxillou, an islander of Caye Caulker, who shares her memories of growing up on the Caye. The other two authors are Susanne Michelus & Jason Elliots, frequent visitors to the island. They both capture the vibe and true essence of Caye Caulker village life, sharing their perspective through photographs and words.
It is one of the hardest working organizations and most prestigious in the county with its members raising funds for the good and betterment of the community and individuals in need. But this week the Lions Club of Belize finds itself amidst a major scandal in which one of its members has been charged for embezzling over $10,000 from the Belize Lions Zone 59.
Year after year the San Pedro High School holds its Miss San Pedro High Pageant as fundraiser event and it is always a highly anticipated show especially for the high school students as several young ladies take center stage and vie for the coveted title of Miss SPHS and be a role model for the rest of the student body. And this year there was no exception as seven beautiful young ladies, Xenika Armstrong, Porsha Belisle, Jaleni Lawrence, Miriam Palacio, Trisha Acosta, Briceydi Venagas and Fatima Graniel delighted the crowd at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium on Saturday, April 17.
The San Pedro AIDS Commission is a very active group on the island that does its best to educate and prevent this epidemic. As part of its ongoing campaigns the SP AIDS Commission held free HIV testing on Sunday, April 18, at the Central Park. Knowing your status is important and the encouragement of practicing safe sex is vital these days so as to help prevent the spread of this epidemic. A total of 59 persons got tested; one of the best turn outs that the SP AIDS Commission has ever seen.
The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) is preparing over 750 enumerators countrywide for its 2010 Population & Housing Census for Belize. Over 40 enumerators are taking a two-week training here on the island and on May 12, 2010 these enumerators will be visiting your home under the theme “It’s 2010…Let’s count again!”.
New Flight Schedule and Terminal Inaugurationby Gerry Badillo Monday, April 19, 2010, was a very proud and important day for Tropic Air, as Belmopan greeted and accepted Tropic’s first scheduled flight from San Pedro to the Hector Silva Airport. At airport grounds, the inauguration was held with invited guests who included international ambassadors and Mayor of Belmopan Mr. Simeon Lopez.
Hon. Manuel Obregon's Arrival in Belize On Saturday, April 17, 2010, Hon. Manuel Obregon, the current Minister of Culture of Costa Rica and also a world renowned pianist, composer and producer, arrived in Belize from San Jose, Costa Rica for his eagerly anticipated participation in Belize’s Music Week.
On Monday, April 12, the San Pedro Town Council presented two Yamaha Motorcycles to the San Pedro Traffic Department. These are just two of four which the traffic department will be receiving to facilitate traffic patrols for the traffic wardens. As part of his previous traffic portfolio, Councilor Severo Guerrero acquired these motorcycles along with radios, which are soon to come; Mr. Guerrero now hands over his portfolio to councilor Pablo Ico.

On Tuesday, April 13, The Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute (CZMAI) held a public consultation at the San Pedro Lions Den for the Master Development Plan of Ambergris Caye. Heading the consultation were Mr. Vincent Gillett of Coastal Zone Management, Mrs. Malayka Cardona – planner and Ms. Camila Cardona – Civil Engineer.
One man is dead and another one is on the run after an attempted robbery went wrong, but this time it was the assailants who ended up on the wrong side of the attack. Two recreational hunters were returning home when they ran into a road block set up by two robbers in a poorly lit area in the Tres Cocos Area (1 ½ miles) on North Ambergris Caye. The robbers pulled out a handgun but to their surprise the hunters opened fired and caught one of the assailants while the other ran away.
The Caribbean countries can expect an above-average 2010 Atlantic hurricane with a 58% chance of a major hurricane affecting the region, respected United States forecasters have said. The team from Colorado State University is predicting as many as eight hurricanes, four of which will become major weather systems with winds in excess of 111 miles per hour, to form over the Atlantic Ocean during the June 1 to November 30 hurricane season. In all, it said that there would be up to 15 named storms.
Natalie Arceo has made it to the KTV Latino Karaoke Competition Finals and San Pedro was present at last night’s live airing of the show that takes place at the Bliss Institute, in Belize City. Knowing that Natalie was going to sing last night, a group of her fans in San Pedro chartered a boat to travel to the city to be present as Natalie sang her heart out during day one of the finals. The spirits were high and the energy of the crowd was at maximum level as the San Pedro group cheered for Natalie. She competes with three other finalists for the first ever title of Latino Karaoke.
Press Release – San Pedro Town Council – April 7, 2010 – The San Pedro Town Council feels deeply offended and is outraged at the accusations made in a letter recently circulated by a “so called” member of the San Pedro Business Association. The Council feels betrayed by this action as they have made it very clear to the San Pedro Business Association, as well as other organizations that its door is always open to them to discuss matters of concern. The Council feels that if they wanted to get answers they should have approached the Council first.
Residents and Tourists Frustrated As international tourists and local visitors from around the country flooded to San Pedro for the long Easter weekend an underlying problem with the Island’s water supply, which many were unaware of, made for much an inconvenience when the island needed the services the most.
No more imported Cheese & Milk? Rumors reached our office that there was a possible embargo on dairy products in the country of Belize. This would mean that no store or business establishment would be allowed to sell imported dairy products and only local dairy products would be sold. Ambergris Today made a quick check with Dr. Miguel Depaz of The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) who explained that there is no embargo on dairy products and that there are only proper procedures in place for importing dairy products into the country.
By Raquel Badillo Every year the San Pedro High School seniors are assigned to various offices and working areas to experience how it feels like to have a job and to take responsibility. The school refers to it as “office practice” which entails students to familiarize themselves within an office. The main tasks students are acquired to do are: filing, answering telephones and book keeping, to name a few.
After a week-long of pageantry experience in Chiapas, Mexico, at the Piel Dorada International Pageant, Tatiana Rivero was back in her home town of San Pedro on Monday, April 6. Her family was on hand at the San Pedro Airstrip to greet her and congratulate her on a job well done representing Belize. Cause for celebration was in hand because Tatiana did not come back empty handed from the pageant. Thanks to all our support and that from her fans Tatiana took the title of Miss Internet at the pageant. Congratulations to Tatiana Rivero on a job well done!
