San Pedro and Ambergris Caye can be identified for its simplicity both in its origins, its middle ages and today as well. At first it was a path through the bush, thatch houses, small dories or canoes, coconut farmers, and a lagoon infested with mullet and bonefish and mosquitoes all over.

You are looking at a historic building no longer existing in San Pedro but which existed for some sixty plus years.  It was known as the Bishop’s House and was an upstairs or upper floor house located in the Bishop’s property exactly where the Lions Den is today.  The Bishop used it occasionally when he visited San Pedro but then Martha Guerrero and Abel Guerrero lived there when Mart

One of the favorite, crowd-pleasing events at all beach activities in the past used to be the greasy pole.  It is very simple- a light post measuring about 30 feet is anchored into the sand and greased with pig lard or hard car grease.

If we look back at San Pedro in the 1950’s this would be the most beautiful spot in the small fishing village.  Left to right, the small police station suitable for one small family, a tiny office for one officer and a mini jail for one too.  Next is a small sail boat used to sail a few miles to one’s fishing site.

You know this is a fairly old photograph because you do not see the spanking new Belize Bank to your right.  You do not see the new Lions Den Building in the far background.  What you do see is one of those British-make old Land Rover Jeeps used as Taxis in San Pedro some time ago.

Back in the 1960’s and 70’s, the streets of San Pedro were totally traffic-free.  The streets actually belonged to the children of San Pedro who were totally free to play all kinds of games on the streets without the hassle of any vehicular traffic.  Girls played hop scotch and jumping the rope in all its forms.  Boys played marbles, caperucho, stilts, sling shot, and their danci

The fact that you see seaweed on the beach, light poles with very few wires, short, shaky, looking piers and no buildings over the sea tell that you are viewing a flashback of old San Pedro. The first building you see is a famous hotel in the 1970’s, the Ambergris Lodge,  built by George Stefanco.

Mother’s Day has just gone by, but actually Mother’s Day is everyday.   Indeed Mother’s Day is not only a public celebration.  It is not only a celebration at home.  Mother’s Day is also a church celebration where the congregation gets the opportunity to celebrate with its Mother Leaders.  Such was the case of a lovely Mother, Doña Regina Gonzalez who poses here with fa

The best days of sports in San Pedro could have been in the 1980’s under Town Board Councilors Omar Guerrero and Nicolas Varela.  There was a constant promotion of sports and most of them held at Central Park where the entire town came out on a daily or nightly basis to participate or enjoy.  There was the season for five a side which drew thousands.  Then there was the season fo

You are looking at one of the very first or perhaps the first golf cart on the Island.  This one was being driven by Iraida Gonzalez who was giving her son Kevinsito Gonzalez a leisure ride around the Island beach roads.  This road was just past Ramon’s village leading up to La Punta or Victoria House.  At about this time everyone on the island was desirous of riding on one of th

The Miss Chiquitita Pageant just recently held was indeed a bang.  It is one of San Pedro’s most highly attended and high energy events. In this flashback we get to appreciate the very first Miss Chiquitita that set the pace for this gracious, energetic and proud event of San Pedro.

Why do we call them early champions?  These were some of the early people who put their faith and confidence in San Pedro and joined hands in making it a success.  The journey to take San Pedro High to where it is today was not a bed of roses.  There were sacrifices, effort, trials and tribulations.  In this flashback there was a meeting to plan for a fund raising bazaar or

The Island Plaza is nowhere to be found because it was the year 1972 and the property was one big empty lot belonging to Tio Pil (Felipe Paz Sr.+)  The photographer was standing on the street beside Fido’s just 50 feet from the beach.  This is the narrowest spot on the island where you can see both the sea and the lagoon.  Take a look at the wooden house belonging to the Catholic

Definitely music is learned through practice, but if there is anything like a music gene, it can certainly be seen here.  Virgilio and Perfecto Rivero come from a very talented musician, Mr. Emilio Rivero who was perhaps one of San Pedro’s most talented guitarist both in the lead as well as accompaniment.  Virgilio started with drums in the 1980’s and his brother Perfecto “Peseto” Rivero with the guitar.  Ramon “Memo” Guerrero started around this time with the guitar and later on shifted to the electronic keyboard.  Today all of these fellows are still very much active in the music world.

There have always been those who keep the Carnival tradition alive. Way back then it was Mr. Severito Guerrero the First who wrote songs for all the comparsas.  Then there were Mr. Fido Nuñez, a great promoter of the event.  Later on Mrs. Vilma Arceo promoted comparsas year after year raising funds for the Catholic Church. Today there are a few carnavalistas like Mrs.
