Paranda with the Garinagu of Belize

November is a very important month for a very colorful and cultural ethnic group in Belize called the Garifuna. In San Pedro, the Garifuna Council has a three-day celebration for everybody to enjoy and learn about their rich culture. I marked the dates on my calendar and made sure I was part of the celebration.

Day 1: November 17, 2011:
The Garinagu started their celebrations with an educational culture display of their heritage. Central Park in San Pedro Town was the location of this attractive display. The sounds of the beating of the drums were what lead me to the park to check out what the commotion was all about. I was greeted by a good friend of mine from the Garifuna Council in San Pedro, Mrs. Lateefah. She introduced me into the world of the Garifuna by giving me a brief rundown of their food, music and clothing. (Trust me I learnt a lot & I was impressed) :)

Day 2: November 18, 2011: As I headed to work I noticed from afar the Garinagu entertaining a group of people in front of the Atlantic Bank with their traditional drumming music. As night came everybody made their way to the Central Park for the Battle of the Drums. I have to congratulate all the drummers who participated and showing off their magnificent talent (Next year I shall try it out).  I have to stress on the support of the people who attended and made it a successful night!

Day 3: November 19, 2011: At the break of dawn Mother Nature decided to bless us with some rain, just before the reenactment of the settlement of the Garifuna. It was such a memorable moment as they sailed across the sea and on arrival the rays of the sun just shined upon them. Chanting happily and proud they marched to the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church to celebrate and give thanks.

The three-day celebration was indeed a memorable experience and I totally recommend everybody to come celebrate, experience and support the Garifuna Council in San Pedro. “Gunda Hafedu Garinagu” “Happy Garifuna Settlement Day”:).
