What's Up Today, Gerry?
Summer Program 2011 - Read, Plant, Grow
I was honored to be invited to go and spend a spectacular day at the San Pedro Public Library. If you are thinking that reading is all I did, you are so wrong. The Library is hosting many children from different schools on the island in their Summer Program 2011. This Program is going to be held for two weeks where many children will learn how to “Read, Plant, Grow” (that is their creative theme:)). Indeed that is exactly what all the children are learning to do. On the first day they all read different books that were in Spanish and English (that is perfect because all children get to venture into our two main languages used in Belize). At the Library all the children are greeted by volunteers who guide the children during the summer program (of course helping them in reading and then for break, a yummy healthy snack).
On the second day of the program, I was happy to be greeted with open arms, big smiles and laughter (I felt so special:)). I immediately introduced myself to all the children and had some cool conversations of their fun summer program. Trust me; children today are very clever and so intelligent about their surroundings. Arts and crafts is always a very popular way to teach children how to share and expand their creativity. The volunteers got all the alumni to create a nice pot for them to plant a very impressive Tree. (I will get to that in just a bit). The special guest of the day was Mrs. Catherine Paz from Lady Bug and she had a whole day of planting activities for the happy children (Mrs. Catherine was also greeted with much love).
Planting was a great experience to show all the children what it takes for a beautiful flower, vegetable or fruit to grow. Now that we are on the topic of planting, a special plant was featured and that was the Moringa plant. Moringa trees have been used to combat malnutrition, control High blood pressure, Low blood pressure, skin conditions and much more; please note that many people around the world use this amazing tree (This tree is also known as the Miracle Tree or Tree for Life).
I had an impressive and productive day at the San Pedro Library’s Summer Program 2011. I loved seeing all the children “Read, Plant, Grow”. In conclusion we should all remember that children are the faces of the future and we need to educate them for them to be successful in life. That’s What’s Up Today!
