Teens’ Opinion on Homosexuality

Teens’ Opinion on Homosexuality

Homosexuality is romantic or sexual attraction or behavior between members of the same sex or gender. As a sexual orientation, homosexuality refers to "an enduring pattern of or disposition to experience sexual, affection, or romantic attraction primarily or exclusively to people of the same sex. It also refers to an individual’s sense of personal and social identity based on those attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community of others who share them. Most people discriminate homosexual being! This week I decided to ask my fellow teens about how they feel about homosexuality; this is what they had to say:

Deandra - I don’t hate it ... it’s what people choose to become... that’s their life… no judgment!

Kevin - Homosexuality has been around for a long time before it was known about. Recently it has become such a big deal since society has started to respect and legalize their actions around the world. From my point of view I have a respect for homosexuality, but in my eyes that is wrong although it has become legal and so common now. I have no hatred or am I disgusted by their presence or anything like that, like other people may be. I have had friends who are "gay" and "lesbians" and those are some of the most beautiful friends you can have once both respect each other. Despite this I would not support their actions or them at all. I may contradict myself at some points but I guess it's because it is so confusing dealing with a topic that is still very taboo and hard to understand and talk about.

Maite – I believe it’s the person’s decision to be that and I think it’s not something that should be hidden; everyone has a right to express himself; so I’m cool with it!

Ismael - I believe that God gave each and every one a personal conscious to choose from wrong or right. I don't stereotype any one from their sexual orientation. Everybody indulging in this confusion and I advice them to seek help because the right path i.e. being straight is attainable.

Anonymous - What I think about homosexuality is that each individual has the right to love someone. It does not matter how they are or how they look, what their race is or sex. Everyone deserves to be happy and developing feelings for your same sex is something you cannot control.

Gina – I believe that it doesn’t matter what sexual orientation we are; we are all equal!

The opinions of teenagers is varied, as you can appreciate from the responses. I feel that definitely we need more education and orientation in this topic. We need pastoral advice.  We need to get the church’s point of view.  We need doctors to speak to the teenagers. And most importantly I see the need to orient teens on the society’s position on homosexuality and how it affects families and society.

I respect people's opinion, but in my opinion I think that homesexuals were note born that way. They make themselves and have the choice of being homesexuals. U can't even believe how many men and women after having children, a wife or husband and being married for soo many years, they realize that they are homosexuals. This years in which we are living are corrupted and the worst thing is that these people are not even afraid of what God says in the Bible.

I will never agree with this corrupted society that we are now living in

I commend the teen talk columnist for exploring a topic that may still be taboo especially in our small community, in particular with elders. It takes courage to discuss a topic that can be largely emotionally charged with differing opinions. I want to say that I respect everyone's opinion, as such I would like to offer my own and have it respected as well.

I want to start by saying that there have been a plethora of research studies on the issue of homosexuality. In particular, whether homosexuality is nature(biological or genetic) or nurture (environmental). The findings for these studies reveal that it is both, meaning homosexuality is genetic as well as fostered through the environment. Of course, they work hand in hand. As a person develops biologically their environment helps them further understand their own identity, in this case, their sexual orientation. It is true that many just experiment and it is simply a "phase" but for many it is a reality NOT a choice.

This is something i want to emphasize, homosexuality is NOT a choice. Many believe that homosexuals can easily choose to be straight, but if it were that simple I doubt we would have any homosexuals. If it were a choice, I am sure they would choose to conform to societies' idealogies of what is normal because for centruries homosexuals have had been ridiculed and subjected to a lifelong struggle with their identities. Until recent years have they become more accepted into society, but there are still so many out there that struggle daily because of who they are.

San Pedro needs to develop a community that is more accepting and not merely tolerant of not only homosexuals but all categories of diversity. Let us focus on what makes us humans and work together as one. There is already too much hate and war in the world. By trying to be more open-minded and informing ourselves we can make a difference.
