Reef Week 2008
Earth Day 2008, falls on Tuesday, April 22, is a special day to learn about our planet and how to take care of it. To celebrate Earth Day, Hol Chan Marine Reserve is hosting an entire week of environmental activities called “Reef Week”, from the 21st to the 27th of April.
Activities include the annual inter-school trivia competition, where students representing each school will be tested on their knowledge of Hol Chan and the associated ecosystems, and a skit competition, where kids will be designing and performing their own skits based on conservation of marine resources. Other activities include being a guest on the kids show on Reef Radio, touch tank, movie nights, a trip to Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve for teachers and the 4th annual Lagoon Reef Eco-Challenge.
In addition; one of the Pre-earth Day activities was a slogan competition. All schools from San Pedro and Caye Caulker were invited to participate. Students were asked to submit a slogan for Reef Week based on conservation of marine resources.
Entries were received from Island Academy, New Horizon, Holy Cross, San Pedro R.C, and Caye Caulker R.C., all slogans were good, however the Standard 6 class of Caye Caulker R.C won first place with their slogan: “The reef is beauty; to protect it is our duty”. Their prize was a class trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve on a catamaran, sponsored by Hol Chan, Seaduced by Belize and Ramon’s Dive Shop. Second prize was given to San Pedro R.C School, which were assorted sports equipments.
Hol Chan Marine Reserve would like to thank all the school who participated and look forward for their participation in upcoming events.
