Mothers Have a Blast!
The highlight of the San Pedro Town Council’s Mothers’ Day Program on Saturday, May 6, 2006 was the performance of Chonita & Mac’Ta, two comedians from Merida, Yucatan.
Chonita & Mac’Ta had everybody in tears as they cracked joke after joke with a non-stop performance almost one hour long. These great comedians from Mexico were playful and witty and had highly entertaining jokes; not one person was seen not laughing. They danced, sang, made fun of each other as well as others in the audience. They really showed their love for San Pedro and expressed their joy of having the opportunity to entertain all the mothers at the show.
The other major highlight of the night was the selection of Mother of the Year. This honor was given to 72 year old Mrs. Angelita Guerrero. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers and plaque from Mother of the Year 2005 Margarita Lara. A very shy Angelita let the Mayoress and audience know that she was very honored of having received such a prestigious title. Mrs. Guerrero is married to Don Lucilo Guerrero and mother of seven children: Ramon Guerrero, Severo Guerrero, Amelia Nuñez, Angelita Nuñez, Mireya Molina, Lourdes Ventura and Lourdes Guerrero (deceased). She has 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Chonita & Mac'TaDuring the special evening last Saturday, mothers in attendance were also treated to a gourmet turkey dinner, delicious dessert and complimentary drink. Other highlights of the evening were performances by Barbara’s Dance Group, The San Pedro Dance Company, a juggling act by Mauri Kurcbard from Buenos Aires, Argentina, musical performance by Doris Beth and music by Rompe Raja Band.
As the evening progressed, the Town Council gave away hundreds of gifts in the form of raffles and prizes which were donated to the San Pedro Town Council by the many businesses and individuals of the island, included dinners at top restaurants, gift certificates from gift shops, a cellular phone, a microwave & toaster and cash prizes, amongst others. Prizes were given out to the oldest mother present, most look-alike mother and daughter pair and for the families of three generations of mothers present at the show.
Barbaras Dance GroupIt was indeed a great night as hundreds of mothers who attended the evening’s gala left home with large smiles across their faces. The event organizers did a wonderful job, and so did the many talented artists, both local and international, who provided a spectacular evening of shows for our deserving mothers. Ambergris Today Newspaper takes this opportunity to wish our beloved and dear Mothers a precious Mother’s Day. Know that in our hearts, you are all Mothers of the Year to us. Bless you all.
