Matachica…ahh!

I’ve noticed that every resort on Ambergris Caye is keen in presenting unique luxurious accommodations and amenities to its customers. None seems alike, as each one strives to provide a one-of-a-kind experience to visitors who are drawn to the island charm of our Isla Bonita. Matachica says to “Expect the Exceptional” when you visit their resort five miles north of San Pedro Town, on Ambergris Caye. They were not kidding; it is definitely a resort that stands out among the rest.

Palm trees, lounge chairs and beach umbrellas line the beach and hide a magnificent ‘playground’ of relaxation, tranquility and luxury. Imagine, Picture, Think, Ponder and Dream away of warm waters, cool breeze, romance, intimacy, exotic beauty and an escape from the ordinary.

Rustic Chic is the best description that comes to mind when you step into the resort.
Matachica’s décor is very rustic, very aged with timely pieces; they don’t look old or worn out, but elegantly presented with modern furnishings. And the rooms are accentuated with paintings, linens, cloths, throws, lamps and furnishings of authentic Central American/Arabian influences; particularly Guatemalan, Mexican and even Moroccan.

The resort’s majestic lobby, set under a soaring thatch roof, is the heart of Matachica where you can find the lobby, lounge, Mambo Restaurant and the bar. It is designed with rustic elegance and style, very comfortable atmosphere to mingle, relax while you thumb through a variety of magazines, listen to their wonderful collection of world music or browse the internet and watch classic films in the Cinema-Martini Lounge.

Matachica’s award-winning MAMBO restaurant is also situated under the resort’s main palapa. It has been honored amongst the best in the country, serves exquisite contemporary dishes, lots of seafood and a variety of homemade pastas and breads.

Personal and individualized attention is what has set Matachica apart from other resorts that we have visited. Our experience at Matachica began with a golf cart pick-up to a short ten minute boat ride to the resort. On the way a complimentary drink of choice was radioed to headquarters so it would be ready upon our arrival – a tropical fruity punch, wine or champagne; whatever tickles your fancy. Upon our arrival a cool eucalyptus–infused cold cloth was offered to cool off and clean the saltiness of the boat ride. Nice!

With champagne in hand we were delivered to the 3,000 square foot Beach Mansion which waited for the staff of Ambergris Today. Artistically designed in pure luxury the mansion has three bedrooms, which also includes a top floor master bedroom with a private sun patio that overlooks the entire resort and the breathtaking Caribbean Sea to the east.

All three bedrooms have very spacious jungle rain showers big enough for two and separate private screened verandahs to enjoy on the hammock – Simple Bliss. The grand living area is very cozy, very homey with an entertainment center (which we enjoyed by watching a movie after dinner), a kitchenette, as well as a very large outdoor verandah. Feather duvets, Frette linens, towels, bathrobes and Central American interior furnishings, air-conditioning all accent the mansion; the perfect surroundings for a group of up to six persons – very spacious. Reading through the guestbook in the room, I could envision all the great times other families have had during their stay at the Mansion.

Described as a boutique resort, the accommodations at Matachica still feel like home. Even the quaint casitas feature full baths and interiors designed with Matachica’s eclectic Central American style.

Sandy surroundings with lush tropical plants, lead to the beach where you can enjoy the morning sun and the quiet whispers of the cool breeze; even their pier is conducive to relaxation with its personal hammocks and lounge chairs. I personally loved all the coconut palm trees which covered the entire premises giving me that enchanting tropical feeling.

The resort has just gone through some renovations and expansion with the addition of several new casitas and a luxurious infinity pool. The ever so attentive staff is always making sure you are comfortable and taken care of, even poolside where we basked in the sun sipping on cool frozen drinks and cocktails.
