Tranquility Guaranteed at Tranquility Bay Resort!

Tranquility Guaranteed at Tranquility Bay Resort!

By Dorian Nuñez

Tranquility Bay Resort - where the horizon is at your fingertips and you can swim towards the sunrise. And I am speaking literally because the resort’s location is what makes this place in Paradise so unique.

Nestled on the beach on 12 picturesque acres within the Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve, Tranquility Bay Resort has much to boast. It offers a unique allure to visitors – that of its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef of Belize; it is literally at its doorstep.

You see, Tranquility Bay Resort is located on the northernmost part of Ambergris Caye, right next to Rocky Point which is the most north eastern dive site on Ambergris Caye. It is the point where the island meets the reef about a 30-minute boat ride north from San Pedro Town. The area offers several of the largest sea turtle nesting beaches in Belize and diving amidst coral canyons, shallow spur and groove coral formations, Nassau grouper, tarpon and an array of marine life.

It’s a serene resort, one where you can get away from it all, no televisions in the rooms, little to no cellular phone service and absolutely no traffic, except for the occasional flock of pelicans that fly by! You are enticed to relax on your verandah, on hammocks strung between coconut palms or on beach chairs along one of the finest beaches in Belize. The busiest place on the resort is at the pier where there is a full service restaurant and bar and a dive shop where guests collect to enjoy fine food and a cocktail or two.

Tranquility Bay Resort has 11 charming cabañas which have colorful tropical designs, all with breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea. The cabañas can be described as being casually elegant, rustic and private; nothing over the top but very comfortable. One thing for sure is that the beds are super comfortable; one of the best night’s sleeps I’ve had in a while!

There are seven two-bedroom, two-bathroom cabañas and four one-bedroom, one-bathroom cabañas, each with a loft. Each cabaña has bamboo furniture, mixed Belizean hardwood ceilings, hand-painted Mexican tiles with modern conveniences of ceiling fans, air conditioning, refrigerators, microwaves and coffee makers. The resort strives to create a relaxing vacation atmosphere throughout the trip.

One of the highlights of our trip was the morning sunrise at Tranquility Bay Resort. Guests who have not been claimed by the deep relaxing slumber take a few steps from their cabaña to the beach during the sunrise hour to witness the spectacular event. The proximity of the reef and the wide expanse of the horizon give you the feeling that you can actually swim up to the sun. It is an awe-inspiring moment of pure bliss.

And with the reef at your fingertips swimming, snorkeling and diving are a breeze. You can pick up your gear at the dive shop, jump off the pier and immediately enjoy the underwater marvel of Belize’s coral reef. The area surrounding Tranquility Bay is home to nearly 400 species of fish and 70 types of hard corals. We spotted a large green moray eel just beneath the pier!

Kayaking is also another great activity that you can enjoy at Tranquility Bay. Just a few strokes and in minutes you are at the reef’s edge. Our group took an adventurous trip further north making it to Rocky Point, exactly where the reef meets up with the land. On our way we saw large eagle rays and large fish swimming past the kayaks. If you are lucky, you just might spot a magnificent manatee or sea turtle.

Back at the pier, we indulged in lunch – quesadillas, cheviche, shrimp wraps, nachos, fish taco and fish fingers; totally satisfying. And we needed all that fuel as we then went on a snorkeling trip to the reef channel and took to the outside reef fringe. Snorkeling through the currents above depths of 30 to 50 feet was exhilarating to say the least.

Tranquility Bay offers a full-service restaurant and bar, top-of-the-line water sports equipment and an expert staff to assist with diving, fishing and numerous adventure activities. Divers and snorkelers can explore an undersea paradise of mid-reefs, shallow sea gardens and deep precipitous walls with an abundance of colorful marine life. Anglers are steps away from world-class fishing. Bonefish, tarpon and permit make the area famous for flats fishing. The resort is reminiscent of the quaint, serene and quiet days of San Pedro 25 years ago; truly a wonder that still exists in our beloved Ambergris Caye.

We can safely say that at Tranquility Bay Resort your tranquility is guaranteed.

We stayed there in Setember 2010 in the Budget Suite.  The bed is awesome comfortable, staff are fantastic and service at the restaurant/bar, as well as the variety of menu options, are better that you would possibly expect.  Sonya was the cook and everything was prepared like a gourmet meal (all 3 meals a day!).  Snorkeling right off the shore and the ability to swim right out to the reef are advantages unmatched by most Ambergris Caye (AC) resorts.  We've been to AC seven times and Tranquility Bay was not only the best trip to AC but the best vacation we have ever had.  Bob & Brenda
