Elvi’s Kitchen -Where Something Good is Always Cooking

Restaurant Review at Elvi's Kitchen

World Famous Elvi’s Kitchen opened its doors to the staff of Ambergris Today on Saturday, May 16, as we were invited to enjoy some of their most delectable dishes on their menu.

Our waiter for the evening, Alberto, greeted us and took us to our table where soon after being seated he brought us some cocktails which included an Ocean Blue Margarita, Sour sap Colada, Watermelon Mojito and Mango Tango, all prepared by Elvi’s one-of-a kind bartender, Emil Lisbey.

Elvi’s Kitchen is known for having the best seafood dishes and we found out why – as we were served Mayan Scallop and Fish wrapped in a plantain leaf marinated in authentic Mayan ingredients and served with coconut rice, steamed veggies and fried plantains.

Perlita got a treat as she had the Bacon wrapped Scallop kebab grilled with a pineapple and ginger sauce as well as one of Chef Jennie’s Creations – the Chipotle Shrimp Tacos – shrimps grilled with chipotle sauce and served in grilled home-made corn tortillas! Mmm-mmm!!!!!!!!

Luis Raul enjoyed the Roasted Garlic Squid served with pasta, and I got the Caribbean Chicken – tender chicken breast stuffed with chaya (tree spinach) and cheese, glazed with pineapple sauce and served with steamed veggies and baked potato….can you say delicious?

And let us not forget the star plate of the night, the “Dragon Style” whole fried fish served with rice & beans, coleslaw and fried plantain, a true Belizean dish served with style. The snapper is skillfully deep fried giving it its unique shape, or as the chef calls it “dragon style”, and Jose Luis was more than eager to slay the “dragon”. Dessert you ask? Well of course, after all those delicious serving we had, who can say “NO” to Elvi’s frozen Key Lime pie and Home-made flan…..both equally delicious!

Elvi’s kitchen has been serving the community of San Pedro for the past 35 years with dishes such as their Famous fried chicken, excellent burgers, stuffed jalapeño peppers, and other local dishes! With Chef Jennie recently re-joining the establishment she brings some new additions to the already great menu such as the Chipotle shrimps tacos, Seafood “Creole” soup, and enchiladas among others.

With all of this great food and excellent service no wonder Elvi’s Kitchen is world famously known and has won awards such as The International Gold Star Award for Excellence and Quality in 1996 given by then Minister of Tourism Hon. Henry Young and most recently Mrs. Elvia Staines received the BTB’s Lifetime Achievement Award for 2008.

Elvi’s Kitchen is one of the top restaurants on the island….so treat your taste buds to great seafood plates and let us not forget a one-of-a-kind Maya Buffet served on Fridays where you can try authentic Mayan food, such as cochinita pibil, pollo tikin xic, mayan bean, yucca sofrito and of course tamalitos and home-made corn/flour tortilla.

Elvi’s Kitchen is located on Pescador drive and their opening hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday to Saturdays. For reservations call 226-2176/2404. When you visit Elvi’s Kitchen and you are tipping the excellent waiters, don’t forget to tell them that Ambergris Today sent you.
