Jumbo-tron please be gone!

Jumbo-tron please be gone!

Dear Honorable Mayor Elsa Paz and the San Pedro Town Council,

We respectfully request that you reconsider allowing the jumbo-trons on the new clock.  San Pedro Town is a beautiful and authentic piece of paradise.  Our guests choose to visit us because we are a pure and un-commercialized destination.  The current jumbo-tron by Tropic Air is already a tacky monstrosity giving our guests a distasteful first impression of La Isla Bonita.  We are genuinely concerned that a significant portion of our island's guests, especially our repeat guests, may choose to stop coming to spend their hard earned time and money in San Pedro if they believe that we have lost our soul, and sold out to commercial private interest.

It is in the best interest of the people of our community, as well as the Town Board, to not allow the jumbo-trons on the clock.  It would be reasonable to simply put "welcome to San Pedro" on all four sides, instead of only writing it on two sides with the offensive jumbo-trons defacing the remaining two sides.  Or, if Ramon's is adamant about gaining credit for their "donation" they could put a simple, painted logo on the clock instead.

We are not opposed to a town clock. However, we are requesting that you modify the embellishments on the clock and refuse to allow the jumbo-trons; thereby, keeping San Pedro's identity of authentic cultural and environmental integrity intact.

Both Front Street as well as Central Park belongs to the people of La Isla Bonita.  It is a daunting precedent to set that a private for-profit company be allowed to advertise in the most prime location on the island for the small fee of a donated clock.  We are also concerned that even though Ramon's is currently saying they will not charge rent to other companies to advertise, there is nothing to stop them from doing so in the future.  It is the same concept as when we were promised no vehicles would cross the bridge when it was first built, and now vehicles are crossing.  "If you build it, they will come."  Why should a private business gain rent from public property?  And if they do not charge rent, why should a private business be allowed to monopolize public property?  If you allow Ramon's to put jumbo-trons on Front Street, then why would you not allow every hotel on the island to do so - and then what will we have. wall to wall billboards obstructing everyone's view of our beautiful crystal clear sea and barrier reef?  We are not exaggerating; we are taking this concept to its logical conclusion.

The future direction of our island is in your hands.  Please keep public spaces for the benefit of all the public – not one private business.  Please do the right thing and say no to the jumbo-trons so that tourism will continue to thrive and the children of La Isla Bonita will have the same opportunity that we have had to make a living here on Ambergris Caye.

Submitted respectfully,

Alonzo and Ali Flota
Plus our 33 staff members and 11 guides
And all of our Guests

"Jumbo-tron please be gone!"

Yes, Mayor Elsa Paz,

We are calling for a meeting. I agree with the other person who wrote before. Stop Hiding behind the microphones of the Reef Radio. It  is not helping. Stop hidding and show your face in public! We have a voice and looks like we are unheard. Shame on you!

Mayor Elsa "Castro" Paz,

We all know why you are acting the way you are acting. We know that you are not running for the election that is coming so you don't care what people say or think about you!

Common sense is not so common now a days.  You have said in other intervies that the traffic is crazy around town. Now putting a Town Clock in the middle of the street will help? Again, common sense is not so common.

Now Money! Just because Ramon's Village is giving you the town clock and asks you to put it smack in the middle of the street you will do it?

I used to respected you a lot. Especially because you are a woman in a man's world but all that respect went down the drain. Now the only thing that will come to mind when I hear your name will be that Town Clock.

Mayor, Stop being "TERCA" and just listen to what the local residence are asking. JUST MOVE THE CLOCK!

Accept the donation but just MOVE THE CLOCK FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET.

Again use your common sense.

"Fact of the matter is that people in general become hesitant about change" has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with impeding and/or blocking the view of the water or the Ramon "issue" or Madam Mayor's reluctance to address the citizens.  There is more melodrama at issue here and the citizens that live, not visit, here, are more knowledgable about what is really going on than some others.  "Stir crazy" comment is unwarranted, and rather a cheap shot at concerned residents that continue to face those who do not think about consequences.  That's my story and Ima stickin' to it.

My wife and I have visited San Pedro 7 times since 2007 and I can say we totally agree withe this post,  The Jumbo tron outside the airport is absolutely appalling and detracts from  it tthe entire feel of the Island,  Up until now we have been willing to over look it as an isolated mistake.  Hopefully the town council will come to their senses and realize why people come to San Pedro in the first place and correct this short sighted mistake before its too late.  Otherwise we will have to alter our retirement plans and will be making our trips to Roatan and elsewhere instead

Jumbo Tron?  Seriously? Tacky, tasteless, cheesy, riduculous, monstrosity.  Never in a million years would i imagine this sort of thing would be happening in paradise.  What has happened to less is more? Is this sort of soul-less vulgarity what is to represent La Isla Bonita?  Mayoress? Are you listening?  Put your foot down, put both feet down, PLEASE.

I remember when Madam Mayor first thought about the office and during the time she campaigned there was no sign, at all, that she would end up paranoid to face her public, or for that matter, surely no sign that she would end up like so many other "politicians" that are borderline ludicrous.  Some have actually stepped over the line huh?  Anyway there will eventually be another opportunity for all of us to screen the runners and vote the way our hearts feel.  If you do not vote then you can not bitc_ about the result.  We got what we paid for or perhaps some business(es) did.  What a shame; she could be so much better.

Fact of the matter is that people in general become hesitant about change, a clock tower is what's making people go stir crazy? i've not heard of one local be so adamant about the clock tower. How exactly is a clock tower infringing on the future of the young ones on the island? seriously, a clock tower is that bad? if anything, the poor education standards of the whole country should really be the issue for you if you are so worried about the "future" our our children and their ability to "thrive", this is so ridiculous, stop being so melodramatic! A monololy? I'm sure the list goes one, how come these other bigger monopolies is not an issue for you? If you're going to start rambling about all monopolies, then you better start naming ALL the monopolies that exist presently.

Please, seriously, from a san pedrano that lives abroad, this sounds so silly, if you'd put this much effort on issues that really need some discussing, then you could really make a difference in Bze - for the "future" of our children!

- from a fellow san pedrano who is not impressed, living abroad

Come on Mayor! This town does not belong to you. Consult with the people at a public meeting. Don't hide behind the microphones of the Reef Radio.

November 4, 2011 - 16:45

I hope all recipients of this letter take it extremely seriously. It is absolutely true that our visitors are escaping the city life and the lights etc to come and enjoy a Paradise Island.  It is difficult for the mayor to understand because when she becomes a tourist, she probably wants to go to Vegas and the lights. Why is she afraid to have a public meeting of consultation? Is she afraid of reality?  Please Madam Mayor ; be real.

Me thinks it might be time to visit Caye Caulker.
