Guarapo Juice - A refreshing Cuban Treat!

Guarapo Juice - A refreshing Cuban Treat!

We had heard much buzz about a new juice stand on Pescador Drive and were very curious to see what all the hype is all about.

We stopped at the new restaurant in town – Hemingway’s Café. Although the restaurant has not officially opened for business there is much buzz at their street side deck where Mr. John Thompson is making some delicious Guarapo Juice.

Guarapo Juice??? You might ask, what on earth is that?? Well, it’s a deliciously refreshing juice – Cane Juice! Guarapa or Caldo de caña is the Brazilian Portuguese term for the juice of raw sugar cane. Sugar cane juice is also known as "guarapo", "guarapo de caña", or "jugo de guarapo" in various dialects of Spanish.

Sugar cane juice is consumed as a beverage worldwide, and especially in regions where sugarcane is commercially grown such as Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Latin America. Here in Belize sugar accounts for 60% of Belize’s Agricultural Export. The principal crop is sugar cane which is used for sugar production and as feed stock for ethanol production.

We all love eating the sugar cane and sucking the sweet juice of the pieces of stem, but now we can enjoy fresh squeezed cane juice on hot tropical days on beautiful San Pedro. So how is this delicious juice prepared?

The drink is obtained by crushing peeled sugar cane in an electric mill. It is then is often served cold with other ingredients added to the fresh juice, such as a squeeze of lemon or lime, pineapple, passionfruit, ginger and ice.

Mr. Thompson was more than glad to serve up some fresh Guarapo for the Angels with a twist of lemon juice. And boy was it delicious!!! SWEET!!! Refreshing, sweet and 100% organic, it doesn’t get better than that!

Hemingway’s Café will open its doors this Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will be serving delicious Belizean and local cuisine. Be sure to drop by and try the delicious Guarapo Juice and be sure to tell them Dorian’s Angels sent you. And remember if the Angels recommend it, Its Gotta be GOOD!!! ;-)

Sugar Cane trees? You from Jersey (the garden state)?

Hmm. Now there is an idea! I would love to grow a couple of sugar cane trees in my backyard. Going Organic is the best way for health now a days. That is why our grandparents were healthy and strong!

Cool!  In the 1950's everyone grew sugar cane in their yards and we all delighted in peeling the cane and chewing it to enjoy the juice.   It was also a good way for children to soften their milk teeth  and be able to remove them easily.
