By Gustavo Ramirez, Guidance Counselor / Education Consultant  - Many teachers (and school administrators) spend far too much time “talking to” difficult students; they must think that the more attention they give difficult students, the better educators they are.

Dealing with Difficult Students

Should two or three ‘difficult’ students take up most of an educator’s time? On the days when these students are absent, or pulled from class, everything seems to go smoothly. Teaching is fun; everyone seems more relaxed -- no interruptions.  When they’re in class, though, they make a teacher want to pull his/her hair out.

Almost everyone knows those very public cases of students who are gossiped about so openly by other students, teachers, and the community -- the student whose parents are alcoholics and who fight a lot, or the one whose drug dealing parent is no longer around.  But, there are many other students with their very own secrets!  Their deep secrets are hidden and locked away from everyone

Classroom Management

Classroom management is not easy. How do you “manage” 32 or more different and restless teenagers in the same room every day, with each one displaying various levels of strengths and/or weaknesses in different subjects? Each teacher has no more than 45 minutes at a time to “manage” all of them, and bring out the best in each of them!

- By Gustavo Ramirez, Guidance Counselor - No two people are alike – not even identical twins.  Each human being is unique and different, in one way or another, from every other human being. So then, if we are each different, our schools today should be set up to cater to the wide differences in students within each classroom.
